Audio output

I plug in a stereo amplified computer speakers into the audio jack, and all I am hearing is a very low audio from one speaker even thought it is at full volume.
Is the audio mono or stereo? can it take an amplified speaker or does it require a plain speaker?
Can I get my audio from the HDMI socket?
