What problems happen during a power outage?

It says to avoid abruptly disconnecting power when the LP is running, but what can happen if power does goes out?

I've disconnect power when Windows is runinng as well as when it is booting with no problem. Perhaps just lucky?
What problems have you seen when doing this?
