Ubuntu 16.04 on LP

Installed the official ubuntu release for LP and have been using it most of the weekend. The display was very flaky (the mouse cursor was jumpy, and the display was leaving artifacts behind) as such I thought I would try the Kernel patch. This fixed the mouse cursor issue and the artifacts, however now I can't install any drivers that require "linux-headers" or perform a "make" as I get an error during compile of "make ARCH-x86_64 CROSS_COMPILE= -C /lib/modules/4.4.0-2017022140/build M=/home/admin/rtl8188eu modules...." and then Makefile:151 recipe for target 'modules' failed

Any direction of how to resolve this?

FYI I am trying to install a TP-Link usb dongle. I am getting pretty low Mbs with the onboard wifi and thought I would test a dongle in order to see if this would give me better Mbs. And yes, my other computers on the network get about 100Mbs. But with the LP wifi I get about 3Mbs. Thanks for any help.
