Comms Disappearing

I have a Lattepanda 4G/64G and I am trying to expand the IO by using the Gravity IO expansion shield V2.0 but anytime I connect the shield I can no longer program the micro controller chip as the comm port disappear, anyone experience something similar?
I also noticed after the first upload of a sketch the same thing will happen even without the shield attached and won't become available again until after a full restart of the system.
Anyone got any advice on either of these?
