How to configure LP-Alpha for HDMI 4K with Ubuntu?

Now I want to do the same with another Alpha running Ubuntu 18.04, but so far can only get it to run 800x600 correctly. Higher resolutions I've tried result in a desktop larger than the monitor.
Is there a guide I can follow to set at least one monitor use at 4K resolution on Ubuntu?
