Dual Monitor Mode- USB-C outputs grey screen with Stripes

I have been running into a issue periodically on a few Delta units,   This has occurred both with Ubuntu and Arch versions of Linux.  

When running dual monitor occasionally the USB-C output turns grey with thin white vertical lines at startup.    I ruled out a bad USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter as it has been consistent regardless of cable change.

The only thing that seems to fix the issue is to reboot the machine twice and that clears it up for a while.  Happy to hear any thoughts on what the issue could be.
