How link my an Arduino project with a React Native app for inputs and stuff

For my university mini-project I’m planning to have a project wherein I am required to develop an application that interacts with the Arduino/ESP microcontroller (this includes sending inputs from the app and vice versa).

However I’m not quite sure how I can do it. My seniors say it’s not possible to do so but I’d love to hear otherwise.
